NYX Haul with Swatches!

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Haul

In the past few weeks, I've hauled some NYX products and I figured that since I had some time on my hands, I would post up swatches for you guys!

NYX Haul
  • Tinted Lip Spa: "Spirit"
  • Eyeshadows: "High Light", "White", "Princess Pink", "Root Beer"
  • Blushes: "Peach", "Pinky"
  • Sheer Gloss: "Fabulous"
  • Doll Eye Mascara Waterproof: "Black"
I swatched everything dry with no primer, with flash:

NYX Swatches

I am loving the Tinted Lip Spa and the blushes. I don't really like the scent/flavor of the Sheer Gloss, but that's just me. It's a little too faux-fruity for my taste. I have been using more mineral shadows lately so I've rarely used these, but they seem to be ok so far.

Use NYX? Love it? Any recommendations or favorites? Let me know!

Have a great weekend :)

Fashion Match: Nicole Scherzinger!

Fashion Match

This bright evening look that Nicole Scherzinger wore to the Maxim 2008 Hot 100 Party was sure to turn heads! I wouldn't have expected less, as gorgeous Nicole made #22 on the Hot 100 list last year, by the way.

Her sparkling diamond and black rocker accessories complete the look, which is perfect for an evening of clubbing and dancing. Unfortunately, we can't all spend like celebrities, so I decided to recreate this look using mostly budget-friendly pieces.

Nicole Scherzinger Fashion Match

What I used:
  • A) Off Shoulder Kimono Tunic Mini Dress in "Light Blue"
    $19.99 at Ami Clubwear

  • B) "Kimberly Stewart" Inspired Fingerless Gloves (One Shown)
    $32.72 at ASOS

  • C) Bracelets (1, 2)
    $14.50 and $10.50 at Claire's

  • D) Snakeskin Clutch in "Blue"
    $39. at Bebe

  • E) Metaphor 2 Strand Crystal Rhinestone Pierced Earrings
    $15. at Sears

  • F) Moda Spana Women's 'Karmina' Slingback Pump
    $45. at Endless
So the grand total of this outfit (which probably cost $1,000 or more in designer duds) is a mere $176.71! That's the whole outfit for under $200!

What do you think? Are you a fan of Nicole? Do you like her look? Let me know!

Mineral Concepts Mineral Foundation Review! (With Swatches)

Labels: , , , , , , ,

Makeup

I was recently given the opportunity to try out some products from the Mineral Concepts Mineral Makeup line!

Mineral Concepts Foundation Samples

I was running out of usual foundation so it was quite convenient that I was able to test out some mineral foundations from this company. Along with other sample goodies, the 'Sampler Kit' I was provided with included two shades of Mineral Foundation, one Velvet Finishing Powder and one Mineral Blush. I really liked the coverage (medium to full) and found that the shades "Sand" and "Almond" were very close to my own skin color, but not exact, of course. Luckily, with the Kit I was able to combine two of the shades to create the optimal color for my complexion. It seems like depending on how much sun my skin gets, most of their shades would work out well for me!

The two foundation shades I blended were "Porcelain" and "Tan" and the result turned out fabulously. I figure in the summer when I have more of a tan, the accurately-named "Tan" shade will likely be my go-to color. This product feels awesome on! I applied with my trusty Kabuki brush and was pleased with the instant results. The product felt creamy and soft, and blended almost as if I was applying a lightweight cream foundation or liquid. I did, however, have to be careful not to apply too much because the coverage can get a bit heavy if you cake it on! That being said, you really do not need an extra concealer with this product. Just apply a little extra Mineral Foundation over any trouble spots or redness with a concealer brush, and voila! Flawless.

Mineral Concepts Swatches

Also included was a deliciously smoothing, featherweight Velvet Finishing Powder (I chose "Matte") that set my makeup, and controlled shine. I did use a primer beforehand as well that probably helped a bit as well. I only had to reapply the Finishing Powder once throughout the day and my makeup stayed superbly. Don't be frightened by the bright white shade of this powder, I promise you it blends out to a translucent veil! You can even see on the swatch image above how it makes your skin look airbrushed!

All in all, the Mineral Concepts Mineral Makeup face line is excellent for most skin types. I have combination skin and am acne-prone, and the oil-control was pretty decent with these products. I will have to continue using to see if it improves the condition of my face (experiencing a slight almost-that-time-of-the-month breakout currently), but so far, so good. These products are irritant free, so I'm not worried. Dry skin will love the creamy, smooth application! For the very oily, more Velvet Finishing Powder can be used as a pre-base primer. You can order your generous samples right on the site!

More Mineral Concepts coming soon! :)

What do you think? Any mineral makeup lovers out there? Have you tried Mineral Concepts?

Make It or Break It: Summer Trends!

Make It or Break It

As the weather warms up and the stores flood with summer clothing, certain trends are becoming apparent on both the shelves and the street. This "Make It or Break It" topic focuses on two of this year's summer trends!

This summer brings us some lovely rediscovered fashion, such as bright colors and graphic designs, as well as classic lines and new florals. However, two very noticeable styles that are definitely showing up everywhere are Ombre and Maxi Dresses. The ombre look features a dip-dye color gradient which fades from dark to light. This design is showing up everywhere, from tanks to skirts to handbags... ombre is definitely in. Maxi dresses feature a floor-length departure from the super short hems of yesteryear. Which trend are you rocking this season? Take the poll and see how you match up with other readers!

What is your favorite trend? How do you wear your maxi dresses or ombre outfits? Comment and let me know!

Gilden Tree Nourishing Foot Cream Review!

Labels: , , , , , ,

Skincare

I just tried a sample of Gilden Tree's Nourishing Foot Cream. Gilden Tree is a natural skin care line that targets foot care. The Kiran Forest Foot Cream that I tried came in a cute little sample and was loaded with great ingredients like Aloe Vera, Jojoba, and Shea Butter. It smelled very botanical and herbal, like an organic produce department! I applied it right after taking a shower to my somewhat rough heels and waited for the magic! At first, I was skeptical, as usual. I figured this was just another foot cream that wouldn't really do too much. But here I am sitting, oh, maybe 15 minutes later, and my heels are REMARKABLY softer. This is after one application! I will continue using this product until my sample runs out to see if the results can get any better than this!

This is definitely a great product for sandal-ready feet. Gilden Tree's products are made with certified organic ingredients and have been featured in Oprah Magazine! In addition to great spa products, they also have scrubbies and slippers and robe sets... perfect for a "green" gift!

They have a couple promotions going on, including free shipping on your first order with the code CHALLENGE08, as well as 20% off your order with the code POTES05. Check them out, ladies!

Fit Flops: Fashion Disaster?

Labels: , , , , , , , , , ,

Make It Or Break It

This week's Make It Or Break It topic is something that I'm sure many of you have seen in stores lately: The Fit Flop.

I have seen these sandals gracing the shelves of Bath and Body Works, Macy's, Victoria's Secret, and more. This shoe is basically a specially formatted flip flop that claims to give your legs a work out just by walking in them. Fitflop.com calls them "a dual-use fashion/fitness product" that is "engineered" to please. They carries styles and sizes for men and women.

For details on how Fit Flops work, you can check out their official website, here.

Fit Flops

Now... I have raised some questions upon analyzing these shoes. First off, are these too gimmicky to be taken seriously? They are a little bulky looking in my opinion, and the basic styling screams "Fit Flop" across the strap in sewn writing. Is this just a fad with a likeness to the "electrode belt" that you can wear instead of doing ab exercises?

I think that it is great to exercise and feel fit and healthy. But if you are wearing a specially formulated flip flop instead of going to the gym, what kind of results are you really going to see? Frankly, I would really have to see it to believe it. And, given that scenario, do you think if you saw a heavier person wearing Fit Flops you would be quick to judge that they are looking for an easy alternative to exercise?

Fitness is important, but disguising "work out" shoes as bulky sandals is hardly doing society a favor, in my opinion. Eesh, and look at their latest creation:

Photobucket

I feel like anyone serious about working out or power walking probably would rather be doing so in the cradling support of a real sneaker. Why not incorporate the special "Fit Flop" technology into a sneaker for working out?! I bet that would sell and work a lot better in the long run (no pun intended)!

Own a pair of Fit Flops? Want 'em? Why or why not?

AG's Canadian Celebrity Hair Awards!

Haircare

I received a press release from AG Hair Cosmetics today letting me know that hairstylists across Canada have chosen their top pics in AG Hair Cosmetics' 8th annual Best Canadian Celebrity Hair Awards!

The winners of AG’s 8th annual Best Canadian Celebrity Hair Awards are:

AG Hair Cosmetics Awards Top Photos

  • Sexiest Hair on a Canadian Actress: Sandra Oh
  • Sexiest Hair on a Canadian Actor: Scott Speedman

  • Best Hair on a Musician: Avril Lavigne

  • Most Interesting and Unique Hairstyle: Seth Rogan

  • Best Hair on a Canadian Athlete: Trish Stratus, WWE Professional Wrestler
A record-breaking 600 Canadian hairstylists voted in AG’s Best Canadian Celebrity Hair Awards — the highest participation in the award’s history. Voting took place online this winter. In addition to voting on the best Canadian hairstyles, AG’s artistic team offers tips on how to recreate the famous ‘dos at home. (Visit www.aghaircosmetics.com for step by steps, pictures and bios on the winning celebrities!)

Personally, I am never all too impressed with Sandra Oh's hair, but I don't really find her to be that attractive so maybe I'm not looking closely enough.

I think Scott Speedman does have a nice head of hair though (anyone used to be a Felicity fan?) and that Avril's recent polished locks are pretty decent looking. Seth Rogan's hair is interesting to say the least... but Trish Stratus's bleached blonde locks are less than impressive.

What do you think of the stylists picks? Let me know!

How To Wear Florals!

Labels: , , , ,

This week, instead of recreating a celebrity style, I decided to infuse my blog with some outfit creations of my own.

So, Spring is upon us and all the stores are overloaded with floral abundance, bringing joy to all girlie-girls around the world! Not the floral type? Think again! Before turning down a flowery outfit due to it's over-femininity, consider these tips and tricks to incorporating some flower power into your wardrobe. You too can wear florals!

Floral Ensemble #1: "Feminine and Fun"
For a dressed-up brunch or party (think Baby Shower, Bridal Shower), try florals! I've chosen a bright silk chiffon watercolor floral dress paired with lighthearted accessories that are more appropriate and punchy than frilly and frou-frou.

Feminine and Fun
Floral Ensemble #2: "Luxe Casual"
Perfect for the boardwalk, barbeques, and other fun summertime gatherings! Layer this outfit over a bikini for a fun look to wear to the marina or beach club. This outfit symbolizes a garden of style and laid-back, yet chic and put-together florals.

Luxe Casual
Floral Ensemble #3: "Evening Wear"
Who knew florals could be so alluring? This outfit is great for those evenings out on the town or for going out dancing! The color is flattering and bold, and the dress shows just enough skin. Pair with some strappy dress sandals, and you're ready to go!

Evening Wear
Another Way to Wear Florals:
Not into a full on floral look? A flowery accessory can brighten up even the dullest of outfits! Here are some fun florals for every price range :)

Get The Look: Blake Lively!

Get The Look

Blake Lively, star of The CW's Gossip Girl, looked lovely as ever at the Met's Costume Institute Gala the other night! She seems so sweet and gorgeous, even in real life!

Anyone else a huge Gossip Girl fan? I am shamelessly addicted, and I don't usually get that way about those kind of shows. All I can say, to those of you who watch the show, is I cannot wait until Georgina is gone! In addition to Miss Lively, I think Leighton Meester (GG's Blair Waldorf) is absolutely beautiful, so perhaps I'll be doing a 'Get The Look' for her soon too!

Anyway, back on topic, I decided to recreate Blake's makeup look so that we can all look a little bit more like the effortless, yet so chic, 'Serena van der Woodsen'!

Blake Lively at the Met
  • Start off with a base. After moisturizing, apply your primer of choice (I like Monistat Chafing Relief Gel, but you could use Laura Geller's Spackle or another primer if you wish).

  • Blake's skin looks pretty flawless but natural here, so depending on the level of coverage you need, even out your skin tone. A nice tinted moisturizer like Smashbox's Backdrop would be great if your skin is in decent shape. A heavier-duty medium coverage foundation like Estee Lauder's Double Wear Light might be in order if you need some skin assistance. If you use mineral makeup, definitely go for that! Don't forget concealer, too, if necessary.

  • Lightly dust your T-zone with translucent powder if you tend to get oily. I like MAC Blot or Sonia Kashuk's Barely There Loose Powder.

  • Groom your brows with a light powder or gel, but do not put too much emphasis on them. The focus is on the eyes, not the brows.

  • Apply a neutral shadow, such as Milani's Eye Shadow in "Almondine" (discontinued?) or NYX Eye Shadow in "Nude", all over over your lids.

  • Using a brown/black eye liner, create a smudgey line that will just accentuate your lashes, blending the liner into your lashes for full effect. Apply falsies, if necessary.

  • Use a lot of mascara on your top lashes, and a little on the bottom. Blake's lashes are smokin' in this picture! I'd recommend L'Oreal HIP or Benefit Badgal for this look.

  • Apply a shimmery white/silver shadow to the inner corner of your eye, and partially to your bottom lid, as shown by Blake here. You could use NYX Ultra Pearl Mania in "White" or NYX Eye Shadow in "Hollywood" for this.

  • MAC Vanilla Pigment is great to dust LIGHTLY on the cheekbones as a highlighter, and would give you that golden glow like Blake's!

  • Finish off the look with a neutral, shimmering nude lip color, such as MAC's Dazzleglass in "Bare Necessity" and enjoy!
Any questions, comments, or additional suggestions? Fire away!

Tagged: Beauty Advice from Mom!

Labels: , , , ,

Skincare

I have been tagged by Beauty Tyrant to share some of my Mom's beauty advices!

Well, let me start by saying that my mom is not a skincare or makeup lover the way that I am. For example, she buys treatment serums but uses them once a week or "when she remembers" instead of using them every day as part of a regimen. Oftentimes, she asks me for advice instead of dispensing her own!

Regardless, she has given me some good advice regarding skincare in the past, so here are a few gems for your enjoyment:

1) Don't use too many products at once, you aren't a lab experiment!
I must say, this advice is very important. I find that whenever I try to use too many product or too many different products, my skin freaks out and leaves me looking a mess. But then, at the same time, I love trying out new stuff so I suppose I don't listen as much as I should!

2) Exercise regularly and get enough sleep.
This advice is essential to healthy skin and overall healthy bodies. Unfortunately, I don't follow it as much as I'd like! I am a night owl so I love staying up late!

Any beauty advice from your mom? Do you have any words of wisdom regarding beauty that you would pass down to your children? Let me know!

Make It Or Break It: Dressing Your Age!

Labels: , , , , , , ,

Photobucket

This week's "Make It Or Break It" topic is dressing your age. This may be slightly controversial, I know, because who is to say what outfits are appropriate for what age groups? Let's take a look at the poll, shall we?

Photobucket

Now, I think that if you've got it you should flaunt it... to an extent. Mariah Carey, although she is a superstar celebrity, does not need to go on stage in a sparkling bra and tight low-rise capris. It's just not classy to look trashy, obviously. She can afford the best of everything, so why look like you belong on a street corner? Lately she has upped her ante, but I think that the inappropriate tendencies still come through. Every shirt is midriff bearing and every bottom is skin tight. Oh well.

Mariah isn't the only one guilty of this faux pas, Teri Hatcher is often caught wearing see-through outfits fit for a twenty-something year old as well. Tara Reid is 32 and is walking around dressing like a sorority girl. I really am a strong advocate of everyone wearing what they want... but in this instance I think that sometimes celebrities make bad choices. Not necessarily because they look too young, but because the clothes are ugly and tacky looking when they could instead be classy and sophisticated.

However, on the opposite side of the spectrum, we have Mary-Kate Olsen. Here, she looks absolutely frightful, from the bleach graying blond hair to the pale as a ghost skin, grandma's favorite mink, and wash-me-out gold rag. I just don't get it. You are young, beautiful, rich and vibrant! Why would you want to look like you are pushing 90? I guess she is taking a page out of Katie Holmes' book here.

I think in this case, its not so much looking your age, but looking good and appropriate for your age. If Mariah wore a real shirt and Mary-Kate put on some bronzer, these faux pas could have been avoided, at least slightly. By all means, wear what you feel comfortable in... but keep in mind that certain styles cater to a younger or older crowd for a reason!

What do you think about this topic? Vote and let me know!

My Current Skincare Routine & 100th Post!

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Skincare

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates, it was finals week and I got a little bombarded.

However, school's out now so I can focus my attention to what is important -- updating. I have some good things coming up, like today's Fashion Match, a review on "Gloves in a Bottle", my Face Of The Week that I missed, and more. A lot of things will be going on within the next month or two, my parents and I are moving and we have yet to find a house, so we might be in transit for a while. This could make it difficult to stay on top of this blog, but hopefully I will manage :)

Anyway, it is my hundredth post so I didn't want to just waste it on something random, so I have decided to share my current skincare routine (that I actually don't want to change out of for once) and what has been working for me to clear up my skin.

As I've previously mentioned, I attempted to use Origins' Clean Energy Cleansing Oil, and wound up with a huge breakout on my forehead. It was a disaster.

After about two weeks or so of use, here is what cleared up my face:

Hibiclens Antimicrobial Wash
This is actually a medical grade hand/body cleanser, used to treat wounds or as what doctors will wash their hands with before surgery. Acne is skin condition so this works wonderfully to cut down the bacteria and therefore reduce existing acne and prevent new ones from forming. I got the idea for using this from reading reviews at Acne.org.

PanOxyl 10% BP
I don't know if there is really a difference between this and my 10% BP ZapZyt, but the container is larger and also this seems to dry clear, without leaving any white residue like the ZapZyt. Anyway, it works like a charm.

AmLactin 12% AHA Lotion
For a long time now, I've known the benefits of using Alpha Hydroxy Acid products to exfoliate and soften skin, as well as reduce the size of pores. This product does all that and more. I feel like when I wake up after putting this on at night, my skin is soft and smooth, and any potential breakouts or situations have been stopped dead in their tracks. This product contains "light mineral oil" in the ingredients, but I have not noticed any pore clogging or problems with this whatsoever, and I've been using for a few weeks now.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion
I don't love this alone, but it is a good product to combine with the AmLactin to cut down it's strength. Applying a 12% AHA product might be a little harsh for certain skin types (mine) so I decided to do a little bit, like maybe 2/3 AmLactin with 1/3 Cetaphil... and I'm good to go.

Witch Hazel (as a Toner and Makeup Remover)
This is a product I have my doubts about. I used to use this as a toner and never saw any real benefits in reducing acne. But it was the only product I was using. I now use this to remove my makeup before washing my face, or as a quick toner if I don't feel like washing my face in the morning. It doesn't make me break out, so thats a good thing. I don't know if it is really benefiting my face in other ways (although it is supposed to be good), so I can't really comment otherwise.

For nighttime, I remove my makeup with Witch Hazel and Neutrogena's Eye Makeup Remover, then wash my face with Hibiclens and let it sit for maybe 15-30 seconds. I then rinse, apply the PanOxyl, let it sit for a few seconds, then apply the AmLactin/Cetaphil.

My face is back to the way it was before the Origins nightmare. My skin is not perfect and probably will never be, but this gets it about 93% there. Plus, the Lactic Acid in AmLactin makes my skin so soft! I actually love this regimen and hope that it continues working for me.

It's funny though, all the bottles for these products look so medicinal/prescription grade when they sit on my counter. It's like the complete opposite of my previous natural beauty approach... but oddly enough science has won over nature for now. I also have been using the aspirin mask on and off and I really like the results I've gotten from that.

Have you tried any of these? Use any surprising products? Let me know!

Make It or Break It: Orange, Streaky Tan vs. Chipped Toe Polish!

Labels: , , , , ,

Photobucket

This week's "Make It or Break It" features two delightfully unpleasant fashion faux pas. In the poll we have the streaky, orange, fake tan versus chipped and cracked toenail polish! Which do you think is worse? Vote on, ladies and gents!

Photobucket

Personally, I think this is truly a toss up. The orange, streaky tan is pretty bad and could've certainly been avoided. In order to prevent the "Oompa Loompa" effect, one must follow these simple rules:
  • Do not apply self tanner without exfoliating properly first! The tanner will adhere more strongly to your dry patches of skin, leaving you blotchy and discolored.
  • Do not go too dark too fast if you are a novice! This is why they make gradual tanners. I recommend Olay's Touch Of Sun line! (If you can handle a "full strength tanner" I really like Famous Dave's Moisture Tan)
  • If you are really uneasy about sunless tanning, skip DIY, avoid the Mystic Tan, and head straight to an airbrush tanning professional. They will spray you from head to toe and give you tips along the way. It's goof-proof!
  • If you have a tanning accident, apply bronzer to cover missed areas or lemon juice to lighten up spots you've overapplied.
  • If it comes down to it, time will heal all wounds... including an Oompa Loompa look.

Now, mess up wise, fixing a chipped pedicure is A LOT easier. Which means that bad toe polish is almost less forgivable than an orange tan job. It's so ridiculously easy to remove your polish and apply a fresh coat... why would you not? Especially since sandal season is almost upon us! Please, ladies, keep your toes in check :)

Fashion Match: Eva-Longoria Parker (2)

Fashion Match

Fashion Match Friday is here! This week I decided to make a match of Eva Longoria-Parker's "casual" springtime attire. Personally, I think this is one of her more eclectic styles, but it suits her small frame. I think the pairing of a plain, simple tank with a dress is so fresh and fun. I love her yellow bag too! Let me know what you think :)

Avon "Flips" for Bonne Bell's Design!

Makeup

I just saw an advertisement for Avon's newest product, "Pro-To-Go" Lipstick, and it seemed very familiar to me. This lipstick comes in an interesting little container that you can use just one hand to flip open, slide up, and flip shut. Very innovative, no?

Actually, this has been done before. Years ago, Bonne Bell came up with this idea (I'm talking about 10 years ago, because I used to have some of these) in the form of their "Flip Shades" and "Flip Gloss". It's interesting because they look like lighters!

I wonder if Avon stole the idea from them? Maybe they bought out the rights to this lipstick design? Was it ever even patented? So many questions left unanswered! I don't like Avon necessarily, so I won't be buying Pro-To-Go, but it's a steal at $6.

Anyone else use or see these Bonne Bell Flip products?

Like the idea of a one-handed lipstick?

Let me know what you think about this!
