Is Jack White the Equivalent of a Scantily Clad Mexican Model?

Labels: , , , , , ,

Let me get up on the proverbial soapbox for a moment ;)

Now, as we all know, I am one for superficial things. I appreciate beauty, style, fashion, trends, and all the talented people who put such things together. I think that beauty and glamour are important in day to day life, to a point.

In real life, I don't really put on a full face of makeup unless I'm going somewhere special. I don't really get dressed up unless I have a reason to. I consider this attitude to be "normal". Unfortunately, as women/girls we are constantly reminded that we should be a picturesque thing of beauty at all times.

This topic is so redundant, I'm completely over it. I'm not a feminist, and I think that objectifying women is bad (although there are worse things). These are just my points of view. That being said, I want to share with you this screenshot from AskMen.com (taken 9/10/08):

AskMen.com screenshot

Now, lets analyze this for a moment. Hmm... a scantily clad Mexican model (Daniela De Jesus Cosio) is "featured" as being worthy of attention... so we could say she is like the ideal girl for AskMen.com for the day. Now, to her left is the ideal male for AskMen.com for the day. Jack White.

Are we looking at the images here? The woman is completely objectified, posing in a sexy fashion while wearing a bikini... and the man is totally physically unappealing. What is this saying? It is okay for a guy to be unattractive if he is a supposed musical genius -- but in order for a woman to be "worthy of attention" she's gotta be sexed up eye candy?

Sounds like a good, old-fashioned double standard.

Now, I like looking at AskMen.com. I like reading their articles and seeing what guys have to say about certain women, etc. I'm not going to stop doing it. I'm not going to write them a complaint, because I know that this chauvinistic objectification is kind of what keeps their site running. However, I do think that it was a valid topic to point out. What do you think?

Get The Look: Blake Lively!

Get The Look

Blake Lively, star of The CW's Gossip Girl, looked lovely as ever at the Met's Costume Institute Gala the other night! She seems so sweet and gorgeous, even in real life!

Anyone else a huge Gossip Girl fan? I am shamelessly addicted, and I don't usually get that way about those kind of shows. All I can say, to those of you who watch the show, is I cannot wait until Georgina is gone! In addition to Miss Lively, I think Leighton Meester (GG's Blair Waldorf) is absolutely beautiful, so perhaps I'll be doing a 'Get The Look' for her soon too!

Anyway, back on topic, I decided to recreate Blake's makeup look so that we can all look a little bit more like the effortless, yet so chic, 'Serena van der Woodsen'!

Blake Lively at the Met
  • Start off with a base. After moisturizing, apply your primer of choice (I like Monistat Chafing Relief Gel, but you could use Laura Geller's Spackle or another primer if you wish).

  • Blake's skin looks pretty flawless but natural here, so depending on the level of coverage you need, even out your skin tone. A nice tinted moisturizer like Smashbox's Backdrop would be great if your skin is in decent shape. A heavier-duty medium coverage foundation like Estee Lauder's Double Wear Light might be in order if you need some skin assistance. If you use mineral makeup, definitely go for that! Don't forget concealer, too, if necessary.

  • Lightly dust your T-zone with translucent powder if you tend to get oily. I like MAC Blot or Sonia Kashuk's Barely There Loose Powder.

  • Groom your brows with a light powder or gel, but do not put too much emphasis on them. The focus is on the eyes, not the brows.

  • Apply a neutral shadow, such as Milani's Eye Shadow in "Almondine" (discontinued?) or NYX Eye Shadow in "Nude", all over over your lids.

  • Using a brown/black eye liner, create a smudgey line that will just accentuate your lashes, blending the liner into your lashes for full effect. Apply falsies, if necessary.

  • Use a lot of mascara on your top lashes, and a little on the bottom. Blake's lashes are smokin' in this picture! I'd recommend L'Oreal HIP or Benefit Badgal for this look.

  • Apply a shimmery white/silver shadow to the inner corner of your eye, and partially to your bottom lid, as shown by Blake here. You could use NYX Ultra Pearl Mania in "White" or NYX Eye Shadow in "Hollywood" for this.

  • MAC Vanilla Pigment is great to dust LIGHTLY on the cheekbones as a highlighter, and would give you that golden glow like Blake's!

  • Finish off the look with a neutral, shimmering nude lip color, such as MAC's Dazzleglass in "Bare Necessity" and enjoy!

Skincare

I have been tagged by Beauty Tyrant to share some of my Mom's beauty advices!

Well, let me start by saying that my mom is not a skincare or makeup lover the way that I am. For example, she buys treatment serums but uses them once a week or "when she remembers" instead of using them every day as part of a regimen. Oftentimes, she asks me for advice instead of dispensing her own!

Regardless, she has given me some good advice regarding skincare in the past, so here are a few gems for your enjoyment:

1) Don't use too many products at once, you aren't a lab experiment!
I must say, this advice is very important. I find that whenever I try to use too many product or too many different products, my skin freaks out and leaves me looking a mess. But then, at the same time, I love trying out new stuff so I suppose I don't listen as much as I should!

2) Exercise regularly and get enough sleep.
This advice is essential to healthy skin and overall healthy bodies. Unfortunately, I don't follow it as much as I'd like! I am a night owl so I love staying up late!

Any beauty advice from your mom? Do you have any words of wisdom regarding beauty that you would pass down to your children? Let me know!

Reader Feedback: Mint Green Eyeshadow!

Makeup

During my Spring Feedback Giveaway, I received many excellent questions to respond to! This is the second of the "Top Five" questions being answered. The first question can be found here. Also, the winner's question is answered here!

Reader Leesha asked: "I'm in search of the perfect eyeshadow (preferably mint green), what brand would you suggest?"

Shop With a Vengeance Response:
The perfect eyeshadow varies by preference of course! Some wearers prefer a cream or stick shadow, while others would never even touch the stuff.

Personally, I like to use loose mineral eye shadows or regular pan shadows. The important thing, in order to make your mint shadow really "pop", is to use a primer (like Urban Decay Primer Potion).

Here is a variety of mint green picks in several formulas!

If you happen to be a beauty "snob", here are some high-end picks for your enjoyment ;)
          • Benefit Lust Duster "Moon Doggie"
            $18. at Benefit
          • MAC Shadestick "Lucky Jade"
            16.50 at MAC
          • Urban Decay Eye Shadow "Green Goddess" (shown)
            $16 at Sephora
          • Smashbox Single Eye Shadow "Zoom"
            $16 at Sephora
There are many great drugstore picks that work just as well as the high-end brands. If you are on a budget, you should try these:
          • Ulta Single Shadow "Mint" (shown)
            $6.50 at Ulta
          • Milani Eye Shadow Compacts "Garden Mist"
            $3.50 at Salons Plus
          • NYX Single Shadow "Spring Leaf"
            $3.99 at CherryCulture

Hope that helps a bit, Leesha!!

If you have any more suggestions for Leesha, or if you've tried any of my picks, go on, post :)

Dermacia Breathable Foundation Review

Labels: , , , ,

Yes, I saw the infomercials. But no, I never even once though to buy this until it was staring me in the face at CVS for $18.99 plus $3 off. I frantically called home, hoping someone could check MakeupAlley for me to see the ratings... no answer. Without an iPhone, I was forced to choose alone! I bought Dermacia's "Breathable Foundation" in Beige and tested it out when I got home.

So, the color match seemed ok for something I couldn't test out. It was only slightly dark and seemed to blend in pretty well. It felt good on my skin, even though it was a little thick. What I didn't understand though was why it felt thick if it was not fully covering my problem areas (redness around my nose, blemishes, etc)! So, even though it felt light, it wasn't full coverage as I had hoped. I dusted some Milani Mineral Makeup over it to set.

I am pretty disappointed that this isn't a miracle product. Although, to Dermacia's credit, it didn't highlight pores, sink into them, or cause any immediate skin problems. It's just a basic light foundation with coverage thats only a little bit greater than a tinted moisturizer. Not worth the price if you really wanted more coverage. Also, I don't know if this foundation is the product that claimed to not rub off... but yeah, I tested it by rubbing my face lightly on a sheet of white paper about 2 hours after putting it on. My skin had remotely oiled up by then, and streaks came off on the paper where I had rubbed. Lies!

If your skin is near perfect already, you might wanna give this a chance, but obviously you wouldn't need to. Back to CVS it went.

I am now trying a sample of Shiseido SPF42 Liquid Foundation PA+++ and it seems to be good stuff! More on that later though ;)
