Reader Feedback: Sensitive Skincare!

Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Skincare

For my third reader question, Misti asks:

"I have incredibly sensitive skin; a good skin care line?"

Shop With a Vengeance Response:

Hi Misti!

Are you looking for a higher-end line, or a drugstore line? I know it's frustrating to have sensitive skin, especially with so many enticing products out there you must want to try them all! My skin is part-sensitive too, so I feel your pain.

To start off, a couple really gentle drugstore picks I could recommend are the Purpose line by Johnson & Johnson. The cleanser is fragrance free and very gentle, but at the same time cleans a lot better than Cetaphil, which I will not bother to recommend. Although Cetaphil is super-gentle, I have found it ineffective as a cleanser and not too exciting as a moisturizer either. I do like CeraVe, another drugstore find, for their Lotion.

However, another product that I like is the Redness Control Calming Gel Cleanser from the Skin Effects line by Jeffrey Dover (available at CVS). This is a product that feels great to apply, washes clean, and takes off most makeup. It is thicker in consistency than Cetaphil, but I liked it even though it did not foam. It is also fragrance free. I believe there might be a dye in there though to give it its blue color, which is meant to offset the effects of Rosecea. The Redness Control line also has a corresponding SPF 30 face cream, which I thought was okay as well. Overall, the line didn't do too much for my skin because I am acne-prone, but it also did not irritate me. It's slightly pricey for a drugstore brand (products are around $13-$20 each).

Lastly, if you are looking for a high end line, I would suggest DDF (or Doctor's Dermatologic Formula). I have yet to actually try their products, but they were recommended to me by another reader. They make a Sensitive Skin Cleansing Gel which has received good reviews on MakeupAlley and should likely have other products that are okay for sensitive skin as well.

Most importantly, be sure to read your labels. Anything that contains too many ingredients is likely to upset your skin! Stay away from Origins, too, because they overload their products with irritating fragrant oils. One Origins counter woman even tried to convince me that their oils are not the kind that make you break out, after I tried to explain that I had an ALLERGIC reaction. Whatever. Anyway, try to stick to products that are fragrance free and dye free.

OH, also... I noticed a small allergic/itchy rash on the side of my face a few weeks ago, and upon reading some recommendations online, I applied Boudreaux's Butt Paste - a diaper rash cream, to the rash (yes, I put Butt Paste on my head) for a few days straight, and it completely got rid of the rash. I was surprised because the ingredients on the Butt Paste said mineral oil, petroleum, etc, so I wasn't expecting much... but it settled down right away. I'm not joking, this stuff is amazing for irritation.

Anyway, I hope that helped out somewhat! Good luck, Misti!

Any more recommendations for a sensitive skinned lady?

Feel free to share :)

Reader Feedback: Sulfate-Free Shampoo Recommendation!

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

For my second reader question, Anonymous wanted to know:

"Can you recommend a great shampoo that doesn't have sulfates? (sulfates strip the highlights/color from your hair!)"

Shop With a Vengeance Response:

Why yes, I do know of a good brand.

I am currently using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner from the Giovanni Organic Cosmetics line, which is available at health food stores and even Target now.

The Giovanni line makes a number of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. They also make amazingly scented body washes, including one called Raspberry Ice (I think) that smells heavenly. The specific products I use are called 50/50 Balancing and they smell divine.

The shampoo even lathers up with no problem (despite being sulfate-free) and rinses away clean. Love it. The 50/50 Conditioner is protein-based and I think my hair has been doing well with it so far. I tried the Smooth as Silk Conditioner as well, and I definitely prefer the 50/50. Depending on how your hair handles protein conditioners, you can determine what kind of conditioner you will need.

A few other brands I've heard good things about are Yes To Carrots, Pureology, and also the Pravana line.

Unfortunately, shampoo is one of those things that could work awesomely for one person and be not-so-awesome for another, so it is really a trial and error process.

However, if you haven't tried the Giovanni hair line, I suggest you try them out!

Reader Feedback: Why does my Liquid Foundation change colors?

Labels: , , , , ,

For my first reader question, I will be answering this gem by reader Apple:

"Sometimes my liquid foundation becomes lighter or darker than my face. What's the deal?"

Shop With a Vengeance Response:

Hi Apple! I believe this phenomenon you speak of is called "oxidation". There are many theories on why it occurs, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure as to the reason. In researching, I have found that it can happen because of changes that occur within the foundation after it touches and mingles with the air, oils, or the acidity of your skin.

There are many theories on what happens when your foundation changes color, one of which claims that the oils on your skin will intensify pigments in the foundation. So, if you are noticing that the foundation changes color well into the day, perhaps this is occuring.

Another theory claims that liquid foundation, when exposed to air, begins to break down. If you think about it, if you look at an old bottle of foundation that has been opened and closed a lot, it tends to appear broken up and discolored. So, that kind of makes sense.

The acidity theory I'm not really too sure on, but apparently if your skin has a more acidic pH than most other skins, you could find your foundation oxidizing a bit more often.

Back when I used liquid foundations, I found that L'Oreal's True Match Liquid Foundation would turn orange on me within a few hours, whereas Revlon's Colorstay would never change color. Some foundation formulas now will claim to have anti-oxidizing agents, so that this color change can be prevented. All in all, if your foundation is consistantly doing this to you, I'd suggest getting a new foundation!

I hope that helped somewhat!

Reader Feedback: Skincare Tips!

Labels: , , , ,

Skincare

Congratulations go out to Katy Morris, winner of the Sothy's Skincare Giveaway as per Random.org! As part of the giveaway, I asked my readers to tell me what they do to keep their skin looking it's best.

Here are the results:
"My beauty tip is use a microfiber cloth to exfoliate instead those scrubbers with coarse material. Another one which I think is more important than what you do externally is watch what you eat. Make sure you eat your fruits and vegetables and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids." - Ngoc H.

"I drink plenty of water and see my dermatologist regularly." - Claudia

"In order to keep my skin looking its best, before I put on my favorite moisturizer at night, I make sure that I exfoliate not with a hand towel, but with an electronic toothbrush. The rubbing motion of the bristles is just the right motion to remove all the dead skin cells that are still on my face. I just use whatever exfoliant I am using at the time. Right now I'm loving Dr. Haschuka's Cleaning Cream." -Rebecca

"Right now my favorite skin care tip is an old fashioned one...but something I had forgotten: after cleansing your face use super-cold water after rinsing to tighten pores!" - Katy Morris

"I always touch my face gently and insist that others do the same!" - Paula in Seattle

"My favorite skincare tip would be to "relax, relate, and release". I know it's a cheesy line, but I believe that hormones play a key role in how our body reacts to various stress levels. And since our skin is our largest organ, it is ultimately affected by our moods and lifestyle changes. I generally can't go wrong with a basic skincare routine (cleanser, toner, moisturizer), however, i've noticed that my skin was its clearest when I made an effort to relax more and not let stressful experiences overwhelm me." - Kenya (Virtuous Blue)

"Mine would be to use a moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher. Also, what the other ladies said drink plenty of water." - Karina

"My biggest skincare tip would be a tip passed on by my mom. It would be sleeping early and having at least 8 hours of sleep everyday. Trust me, it needs some discipline to sleep early every night! When you have enough sleep, you will feel fresh, your skin doest feel dehydrated and your eyes look bright and well rested. You will also realise that with enough sleep, your makeup glides on beautifully on your skin. I've also noticed I do not need as much makeup compared to days when I'm sleep deprived. Skin rejuvenates and heals as we sleep, usually between 12midnight - 3am. Therefore, this also helps to maximize the potential of our night cream treatment. " - Beauty Tyrant
Thank you everyone for participating, and also for the awesome advice!

Reader Feedback: My current skincare and makeup routine!

Labels: , , ,

This is the third question I am answering from the top responses in my Spring Feedback Giveaway!

Loves

Reader "Kanashimi Blue" asks: What is your current daily skincare/makeup routine? Do you have any holy grail products?

Shop With a Vengeance! Response:
My current skincare and makeup products are listed below! I love pretty much everything I've listed, but mainly I think it's important to have products that you feel work best for you. Something that is great on me, might not be so great on someone else, ya know? I have combination acne-prone skin, for reference.

Basically, with both topics, I try to keep it simple. My skin is fairly temperamental so I don't want to use products with too many chemicals or unknown ingredients. The makeup I have listed are products that basically even out my complexion. Of course I use other blushes, eye shadows, and lip products... but I just wanted to give you the mainstay products. Hope this helps!

Reader Feedback: Mint Green Eyeshadow!

Labels: , , , , , , ,

Makeup

During my Spring Feedback Giveaway, I received many excellent questions to respond to! This is the second of the "Top Five" questions being answered. The first question can be found here. Also, the winner's question is answered here!

Reader Leesha asked: "I'm in search of the perfect eyeshadow (preferably mint green), what brand would you suggest?"

Shop With a Vengeance Response:
The perfect eyeshadow varies by preference of course! Some wearers prefer a cream or stick shadow, while others would never even touch the stuff.

Personally, I like to use loose mineral eye shadows or regular pan shadows. The important thing, in order to make your mint shadow really "pop", is to use a primer (like Urban Decay Primer Potion).

Here is a variety of mint green picks in several formulas!

If you happen to be a beauty "snob", here are some high-end picks for your enjoyment ;)
          • Benefit Lust Duster "Moon Doggie"
            $18. at Benefit
          • MAC Shadestick "Lucky Jade"
            16.50 at MAC
          • Urban Decay Eye Shadow "Green Goddess" (shown)
            $16 at Sephora
          • Smashbox Single Eye Shadow "Zoom"
            $16 at Sephora
There are many great drugstore picks that work just as well as the high-end brands. If you are on a budget, you should try these:
          • Ulta Single Shadow "Mint" (shown)
            $6.50 at Ulta
          • Milani Eye Shadow Compacts "Garden Mist"
            $3.50 at Salons Plus
          • NYX Single Shadow "Spring Leaf"
            $3.99 at CherryCulture

Hope that helps a bit, Leesha!!

If you have any more suggestions for Leesha, or if you've tried any of my picks, go on, post :)

Reader Feedback - Color-treated Haircare!

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

This is the first of the five top reader feedback questions (in no particular order) from the Spring Feedback Giveaway!

Haircare

To be honest, I am not an authority on haircare topics whatsoever. For this question, I sought out the assistance of my friend over at Mischo Beauty, who is an expert at hair related topics! Check out her blog, here :)

Amanda's Q:
"Hi! I'm using Pravana color shampoo and Wella Conditioning Rinse for keeping the peroxide in. Do you know of any other products that might be useful for my burgundy-colored hair?"

Kitiya's Response:
The Pravana Color Ensure Shampoo you are using is great because it is "formulated to maintain the hair color's vibrancy and it gently cleanses without stripping color. UV filters protect hair against color-robbing ultraviolet rays."

Is the Wella Conditioning Rinse a color saving conditioner? If not, you should definitely be using a color saving conditioner as well!

You could try Pravana's Color Ensure Conditioner, which works to detangle, strengthen, add shine and most importantly protect "against color-robbing ultraviolet rays".

Here are additional brands to try:
  • Wella Color Preserve Hydrating Shampoo
  • Wella Color Preserve Hydrating Conditioner
  • Pureology Hydrate Shampoo
  • Pureology Hydrate Conditioner
  • Kerastase Reflection Bain Miroir Shampoo
  • Kerastase Chroma Reflect Masque Conditioner

The brands listed above are all for color-treated hair. Another point to remember is that since your hair is "burgundy-colored", the red hair dye molecules are the smallest of the color molecules and are the easiest to wash out of your hair. So naturally, over time, your color will start to fade. But, if you are consistent with using the color saving shampoo and conditioner, you color will remain vibrant longer.

Thanks to both Amanda for her excellent question, and to Kitiya for her great response!

Any additional questions or comments... post 'em!

Reader Feedback: Getting Rid of Ingrown Hairs!

Labels: , , ,

Lydia's Q: "I was wondering, what do you think is the best thing to do to get rid of ingrown hairs?"

Stewie Shaving!
Hey, ingrown hairs are no laughing matter!

SWAV Response:
This question is tough!

Everyone at some point or another has had to deal with the unsightly and possibly painful situation of ingrown hair. An ingrown hair, as you know, usually occurs when the hair is cut, like when you shave. The hair in turn grows back on an awkward angle into the skin, trapping oil and bacteria in the pore. This, ultimately causes a raised red spot or even an infected acne-like bump or whitehead.

Generally speaking, it is better to just prevent ingrown hairs rather than have to treat them. If you can opt for waxing instead of shaving, this may cut down the amount of ingrown hairs that you wind up having.

Otherwise, make sure you keep your skin moisturized, which will help with a number of things. Dry skin is easier to irritate with a razor! Shave responsibly, lol. Use a fresh, or remotely fresh, razor each time you shave. Also, be sure to lather up a rich shave gel (I like Gillette Satin Care in Wild Berry) and let it sink in for a bit before shaving the hair to soften it. Never, never, shave with JUST water... that is a disaster waiting to happen.

After hair removal, be sure you treat your skin! Apply a nice layer of Pure Aloe Vera Gel to soften and protect. Use your better judgment and don't apply anything too harsh or with too much fragrance after shaving, unless you know your skin can handle it.

If you have really bad ingrown hairs consistently, you may suffer from Folliculitis. This is a more serious problem and you will need a prescription cream (like Lotrisone) to treat it. If you begin the Lotrisone treatment, your problem should clear up within the week. Some salons and medi-spas also offer a laser treatment for this problem, which may be something to look into if you can afford it!

Aside from prescription strength and lasers, many brands in various price ranges offer products to relieve and prevent ingrown hairs. Bikini Zone, Kiehl's Ultimate Men's After-Shave Balm and Moisturizer, Anthony Logistics Ingrown Hair Treatment, Veet Anti-Ingrown Hair Cream, or Bliss Ingrown Hair Eliminating Peeling pads are all promising products that should do the trick!

Good luck!
