Estee Lauder Maximum Cover Review

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Makeup

Estee Lauder Maximum Cover is a concealer/foundation that has been around quite a while. I have heard good things about this product so I decided to check it out at Lord and Taylor one day. I purchased it in "Creamy Vanilla" and was on my way. For the first day, I was thrilled with this product. It lived up to all of its claims and completely covered any flaws I was currently having. It was fragrance free, nontransferable, had an SPF of 15, and you only needed the tiniest amount -- it was just perfect.

However, the next day I noticed that with all that coverage, came extreme pore-clogging. Now, the tube says "non-acnegenic", not "non-comedogenic" so ok it won't cause acne, but it will clog up your pores and cause whiteheads and painful bumps that take weeks to go away... aka "acne". Awesome.

I took this product back ASAP. My boyfriend says I love to return things because I do it so often, but I mean come on... why keep something that doesn't work for you!? It only made sense to take it back. The saleslady proceeded to tell me that it did not suit my skin type at all and give me a 10-day sample of Estee Lauder Individualist (which was ok, but I am off liquid foundations again anyway).

I feel bad saying negative things about this product because for the short time that my skin could handle it, my face looked pretty damn good. So, if you have a tattoo, birthmark, scar, or other non-acne-related flaw you would like to cover up... PLEASE buy this product. But only if your skin is not sensitive or breakout prone. If you have even the slightest inkling of breakouts in your past, this baby is a no-no.

I am now just back to using my CoverBlend concealer with mineral foundation. Works for me!

What is your favorite full-coverage foundation?

Got any opinions on Estee Lauder's assortment?

FOTW: April 30, 2008

FOTW

I decided to go with a fairly tame 'Face Of The Week' for my first one. It's not too exciting, but I wanted to get my face out there so that everyone knows who is behind all this Shop With a Vengeance mayhem :)

FOTW 4-30-2008

What I used:
  • Primer - Face: Monistat Chafing Relief Gel, Eye: UDPP

  • Foundation - Almay Nearly Naked Liquid Makeup in Honey, CoverBlend Concealer in Beige and Light, Sonia Kashuk Loose Powder

  • Cheeks - Jane Blushing Cheeks in Blushing Plum

  • Brow - The Body Shop Brow/Liner Powder Duo, Revlon Brow Fantasy Gel

  • Eye - MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, MAC Powerpoint Pencil in Engraved, Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara (see it doesn't do much for my short lashes, does it?)

  • Lips - Homemade Lip Stain!

Comments:

The photos are unretouched, just cropped up. I have been having a bad skin week, so ignore the rough/blemishy condition of mine right now; I had a pretty bad breakout due to Shiseido SPF42 PA+++ Foundation (Fragrance and too heavy, no no) and possibly also Origins Clean Energy Cleansing Oil (too many botanical extracts for my skin to handle!). I have been trying to nurture my skin back to health and bought a bunch of stuff to do so last night... so I'll be back in business in no time!

I did this look on Tuesday so that I could actively comment on it and let you all know how it turned out. I don't usually use Almay's foundation, but I had some laying around so I figured I'd use it. (Now I remember why I stopped using it... it made me very oily, very quickly, and the rest of my makeup seemed to slide off within a few hours!) I am always on a foundation hunt that will probably continue forever. The one thing that seems to always work for me (that I've repurchased countless times) is Milani's Mineral Compact, so I'll likely be back to that right away.

I like the lip stain a lot, and not just because I made it! I think the end result color is pretty and natural, but still very rosy. I wouldn't wear it every day, but I would definitely make it a staple for at least once a week.

This is my first FOTW, but hopefully there will be many more to come! What do you think?

Get The Look

SWAV recreates Eva Longoria-Parker's Look! Here's how we did it:

Eva Longoria-Parker

  • Start off with a clean, moisturized face!
  • Apply a light layer of foundation or mineral makeup, if necessary, just to even out your skin tone. Follow up with concealer for under your eyes or any spots you may have as well. CoverBlend by Exuviance is a nicely moisturizing concealer that will work great for this, but any good concealer will do.
  • Since Eva's look is glowy, there is no need to tone down any excess shine, unless you are oil-crazy. If that is the case, just dust a little bit on your T-zone and call it a day. MAC Blot Powder works well for this.
  • To get Eva's signature glowy tanned skin, try Benefit's Hoola bronzing powder, which gives a nice matte, tanned finish.
  • Now, move on to your eyes. Be sure to maintain your eyebrows, as they will frame this look. Tweeze or wax any unwanted hairs and then fill in with brow powder. If necessary, set with brow wax or gel. I like Benefit's BrowZings for this.
  • For the eyeshadow, start off with Urban Decay Primer Potion to hold your shadow in place all day, and then use a coppery shade over the entire lid (such as Stila Eye Shadow in Ray, or NYX Ultra Pearl Mania in Penny).
  • Apply a thick layer of black liner to your top lid, being careful not to extend the line past the eye! MAC Fluidline (Blacktrack) gives you excellent wear and flexibility. Also, apply a thick line to the bottom lashes as well, be sure to smudge out for Eva's sultry lash look.
  • Now, apply a coat of Mascara, such as L'Oreal HIP, which will add dramatic volume and length to the top and bottom lashes. To pump up the look, you can add false lashes to your top lid and use mascara to blend.
  • Very lightly dust on a slight blush, such as Benefit's Thrrrob! box powder. You want the blush to be very faint, and only apply to the apples of your cheeks.
  • Now, use a highlighter, such as MAC Vanilla Pigment to accentuate your browbone and cheekbones. Smile pretty so you can see the apples of your cheeks as a guideline of where to apply the shimmer. It should just be faintly above this area, making a "C" shape between your cheek and brow area. This will give you Eva's fantastic golden glow!
  • Finish off the look with a pink liner applied all over your bottom lip, such as NYX's Barbie Pink, and coat with your gloss of choice. I love C.O. Bigelow's Lemon Lip Creme for a natural look.
Enjoy! Any questions or comments, feel free as always :)

SWAV Loves: CoverBlend by Exuviance

Loves

After that awful Dr. Hauschka incident, my concealer search is finally over. Pretty big statement, admittedly, but I am absolutely in love with CoverBlend and I don't care who knows it!

The full name is a little long though, CoverBlend by Exuviance (NeoStrata): Multi-Function Concealer SPF 15. Try saying that 5 times fast!

The generally unassuming box (normally I am attracted toward flashier packaging, so this was purely a stroke of luck) claims, "Anti-aging treatment concealer with UVA/UVB protection; Non-creasing, Natural-looking, All day wear" followed by "Physician Recommended" and inside they also state that the brand is "Dermatologist developed" and that they do no animal testing. Sounds too good to be true! Well, shockingly, it's not!

Anyway, this concealer is so great for a couple of reasons: It's very lightweight, so putting it on doesn't feel like you're applying a thick paste. It's hard to explain how light it feels, but it might have something to do with the fact that the first ingredient listed is water. No mineral oil or lanolin here... and that's good news.

Another good thing is that this concealer is somehow moisturizing without those irritating oils! Yup, that means no highlighting of dry skin patches! It smooths on pleasantly, and wears really well too... no caking or settling into fine lines. It's suitable for sensitive skin and non-comedogenic. That means you can use it on any acne-esque formations you may have with no negative effects. It's great for under-eye circles as well!

It comes in a fairly large tube (0.5 oz) for only $16.50! This stuff is such good quality, it makes me mad that I paid $28. for a tiny tube of Amazing Concealer, granted that did last me quite a long time.

If anyone is a Makeup-Alley member, feel free to check out the reviews here. If not, I'll just tell you, they got a 4.2 out of 5, which is pretty damn good.

I bought it in Beige, for my Light/Medium skin. It's available in two other shades (Sand, Light) as well. And since I love Ulta, you can test it out there, or order online!
