Make It Or Break It: Offensive Stray Facial Hair!

Labels: , , , , ,

Photobucket

Ugh. What could be worse than ungroomed brows, prickly upper lip hair, overgrown sideburns and dark facial fuzz!? Nothing.

Maybe I'm making too big a deal of this, but in my opinion, our society seems to look down on the unibrow or some upper lip fuzz pretty drastically. It just makes you seem unpolished to sport a full 'stache as a lady.

What do you think?

The SWAV Solution:

Get waxed or threaded. You could also try a depilatory cream. There's always plucking with tweezers too, that's usually my number one. Its quick and lasts a long time... the only downside is the potential pain or the time involved in getting to the salon (for a wax) or doing it yourself.

OK, I get it, you're busy. Does that mean no time to wax or pluck those stray hairs? Instead of trying to grin and bear it, try a portable personal groomer, like the one I have by Artemis Woman.

This little groomer is safe to the touch, super easy to use, painless, and quick! All you have to do is run it over the offending area and the hair is "shaved" off safely and simply. There is nothing like a little stray hair to ruin your whole look. I use a groomer if I notice some stray unpleasant hair around my brows or upper lip. Just a quick swipe, and its gone... how much easier can you get?

The Artemis Woman Groomer goes for $14.99 at Amazon.com or you can also find it at Wal-mart. A small price to pay for beauty, don't you think? Since it shaves off hair at the surface, the results won't last as long as waxing or plucking, but as a temporary fix, the groomer is your friend! The best part is that 2% of the profit from every Artemis Woman purchase is donated to support alternative treatments and screenings for women's cancers! So you can look good, and give back!

Do you use a personal groomer? Why or why not?

Make It or Break It: Summer Trends!

Make It or Break It

As the weather warms up and the stores flood with summer clothing, certain trends are becoming apparent on both the shelves and the street. This "Make It or Break It" topic focuses on two of this year's summer trends!

This summer brings us some lovely rediscovered fashion, such as bright colors and graphic designs, as well as classic lines and new florals. However, two very noticeable styles that are definitely showing up everywhere are Ombre and Maxi Dresses. The ombre look features a dip-dye color gradient which fades from dark to light. This design is showing up everywhere, from tanks to skirts to handbags... ombre is definitely in. Maxi dresses feature a floor-length departure from the super short hems of yesteryear. Which trend are you rocking this season? Take the poll and see how you match up with other readers!

Fit Flops: Fashion Disaster?

Make It Or Break It

This week's Make It Or Break It topic is something that I'm sure many of you have seen in stores lately: The Fit Flop.

I have seen these sandals gracing the shelves of Bath and Body Works, Macy's, Victoria's Secret, and more. This shoe is basically a specially formatted flip flop that claims to give your legs a work out just by walking in them. Fitflop.com calls them "a dual-use fashion/fitness product" that is "engineered" to please. They carries styles and sizes for men and women.

For details on how Fit Flops work, you can check out their official website, here.

Fit Flops

Now... I have raised some questions upon analyzing these shoes. First off, are these too gimmicky to be taken seriously? They are a little bulky looking in my opinion, and the basic styling screams "Fit Flop" across the strap in sewn writing. Is this just a fad with a likeness to the "electrode belt" that you can wear instead of doing ab exercises?

I think that it is great to exercise and feel fit and healthy. But if you are wearing a specially formulated flip flop instead of going to the gym, what kind of results are you really going to see? Frankly, I would really have to see it to believe it. And, given that scenario, do you think if you saw a heavier person wearing Fit Flops you would be quick to judge that they are looking for an easy alternative to exercise?

Fitness is important, but disguising "work out" shoes as bulky sandals is hardly doing society a favor, in my opinion. Eesh, and look at their latest creation:

I feel like anyone serious about working out or power walking probably would rather be doing so in the cradling support of a real sneaker. Why not incorporate the special "Fit Flop" technology into a sneaker for working out?! I bet that would sell and work a lot better in the long run (no pun intended)!

Own a pair of Fit Flops? Want 'em? Why or why not?

Make It Or Break It: Dressing Your Age!

Labels: , , , , , , ,

This week's "Make It Or Break It" topic is dressing your age. This may be slightly controversial, I know, because who is to say what outfits are appropriate for what age groups? Let's take a look at the poll, shall we?

Photobucket

Now, I think that if you've got it you should flaunt it... to an extent. Mariah Carey, although she is a superstar celebrity, does not need to go on stage in a sparkling bra and tight low-rise capris. It's just not classy to look trashy, obviously. She can afford the best of everything, so why look like you belong on a street corner? Lately she has upped her ante, but I think that the inappropriate tendencies still come through. Every shirt is midriff bearing and every bottom is skin tight. Oh well.

Mariah isn't the only one guilty of this faux pas, Teri Hatcher is often caught wearing see-through outfits fit for a twenty-something year old as well. Tara Reid is 32 and is walking around dressing like a sorority girl. I really am a strong advocate of everyone wearing what they want... but in this instance I think that sometimes celebrities make bad choices. Not necessarily because they look too young, but because the clothes are ugly and tacky looking when they could instead be classy and sophisticated.

However, on the opposite side of the spectrum, we have Mary-Kate Olsen. Here, she looks absolutely frightful, from the bleach graying blond hair to the pale as a ghost skin, grandma's favorite mink, and wash-me-out gold rag. I just don't get it. You are young, beautiful, rich and vibrant! Why would you want to look like you are pushing 90? I guess she is taking a page out of Katie Holmes' book here.

I think in this case, its not so much looking your age, but looking good and appropriate for your age. If Mariah wore a real shirt and Mary-Kate put on some bronzer, these faux pas could have been avoided, at least slightly. By all means, wear what you feel comfortable in... but keep in mind that certain styles cater to a younger or older crowd for a reason!

Make It or Break It: Orange, Streaky Tan vs. Chipped Toe Polish!

Labels: , , , , ,

Photobucket

This week's "Make It or Break It" features two delightfully unpleasant fashion faux pas. In the poll we have the streaky, orange, fake tan versus chipped and cracked toenail polish! Which do you think is worse? Vote on, ladies and gents!

Photobucket

Personally, I think this is truly a toss up. The orange, streaky tan is pretty bad and could've certainly been avoided. In order to prevent the "Oompa Loompa" effect, one must follow these simple rules:
  • Do not apply self tanner without exfoliating properly first! The tanner will adhere more strongly to your dry patches of skin, leaving you blotchy and discolored.
  • Do not go too dark too fast if you are a novice! This is why they make gradual tanners. I recommend Olay's Touch Of Sun line! (If you can handle a "full strength tanner" I really like Famous Dave's Moisture Tan)
  • If you are really uneasy about sunless tanning, skip DIY, avoid the Mystic Tan, and head straight to an airbrush tanning professional. They will spray you from head to toe and give you tips along the way. It's goof-proof!
  • If you have a tanning accident, apply bronzer to cover missed areas or lemon juice to lighten up spots you've overapplied.
  • If it comes down to it, time will heal all wounds... including an Oompa Loompa look.

Now, mess up wise, fixing a chipped pedicure is A LOT easier. Which means that bad toe polish is almost less forgivable than an orange tan job. It's so ridiculously easy to remove your polish and apply a fresh coat... why would you not? Especially since sandal season is almost upon us! Please, ladies, keep your toes in check :)

Make It Or Break It: Whale Tail vs. Muffin Top!

Labels: , , , , ,

I have decided to throw a little order into my blog here. I want to incorporate three official "days" onto the blog so that readers can know what to expect. The topics I'd like to include are: "Make it or Break it Monday", "FOTW Wednesday" and "Fashion Match Friday" :)

The first category will be an interactive poll for everyone to participate in that compares beauty, fashion, and style related things. I just figured this could be a fun way to start off the week. FOTW (Face of the Week) Wednesday is pretty self explanatory... as I realize I have never posted a FOTD and people are probably wondering when one is coming! This way I'm obligated to do one a week. And, Fashion Match Friday will give me a good opportunity to put up a weekly match. I love doing the Fashion Matches so that will keep me busy as well.

So, without further ado, here is the first Make it or Break it Monday post!

This week's poll is: What is worse, the "Whale Tail" or "Muffin Top"?

Vote, Vote, Vote!

Voted? Ok, good. Now feast your eyes on this beauty:

Sigh. Now, I am a heavier girl. Well, people tend to disagree with me on that, but I feel like I'm a heavier girl, and I know what looks good on me and what doesn't. I'm not going to into a rant about how heavier girls should not be wearing low rise pants because I believe everyone is entitled to wear what they feel comfortable in, but just make sure it fits you! A muffin top means, "Hey! guess what, your pants are too tight around the top!" and you should really buy the next size up. I am bigger around the middle and I have slim legs, and this advice really comes close to my heart: Don't be afraid of buying the right size. Who cares what the numbers say, what's important is that your pants fit, look good, and that you are comfortable. Cut the tags out if you have that much of an issue with size!

As for the whale tail, I have nothing to say. Don't hike up your thong if you are wearing extra low rise pants. Don't bend down if you are wearing extra low rise pants. Don't wear extra low rise pants! If you must, try layering a camisole under your shirt and tuck it in to your jeans. Better to show a cami bending down than your underwear! If you are self conscious about muffin tops and whale tails and your middle, try out something like the Tummy Tuck Jeans (hint: Giveaway!) that will prevent BOTH!
